The Original Folktale
The story is based on "Saat Bhai Champa" (সাত ভাই চম্পা), a widely popular folktale from the Bengal region. The original story was first officially published by Dakshinaranjan Mitra Majumder in his 1907 collection Thakurmar Jhuli (Grandma's Bag of Tales). 
The tale is about a king, his seven sons who are magically reborn as Champa flowers, and his youngest queen (later a daughter named Parul in some adaptations) who uses magical powers to save them from a jealous older queen.
